American lawyers and the Arab Middle East. A strange combination - TopicsExpress

American lawyers and the Arab Middle East. A strange combination of ideas perhaps, but they share one major thing in common. Lawyers have a professional reputation that is watched by a firm - Martindale-Hubbell and what they do is rank attorneys around the United States based upon what other attorneys say about them. The public imput is in the area of complaints to the professional ethics committee. Disciplinary action can severely affect any future employment for a long, long time. The big thing is that most of the rating is a peer rating and not a public opinion rating. What other attorneys think about another attorneys behavior is very, very important. This is Israels slowly emerging understanding of how things work with our neighbors. It is not as important what Israelis say unless it is in an area where our neighbors want to listen. Otherwise what our neighbors say about each other rules the roost. The greatest Israeli impact on the Arab world are Israeli hospitals - which are considered better than Arab one and best to go to, and Israeli high-tech where the once struggling nation has taken off and shone. Israeli high-tech they want to mimic and not criticize. So one of the effects of the spread of Israeli high-tech and Israeli hospitals has been a limited acceptance of the Israeli point of view on how war should be waged. The recent criticism from Ramallah about each Hamas missile being a war crime and the interview of a Hamas official on Egyptian TV and watched in Israel with Hebrew subtitles in which the Hamas official was taken on the carpet about the shame the interviewer felt about how Hamas acted as Muslims. He felt shame - a very powerful Arab emotion - and about how Hamas behaved as Muslims.
