American movie audiences loved Carl Switzer as the mischievious, cowlicked Alfalfa of the Little Rascals/Our Gang comedies. But behind the scenes, Switzer was known as a very difficult child star, given to bullying other cast members and playing incredibly cruel practical jokes. After his career as a child star came to a close, roles for Switzer became harder and harder to come by - although he had small bits in notable films like Its a Wonderful Life. On this day in 1959, Switzer was shot and killed when he got into a dispute with a friend over a hunting dog. The SDPL owns several collections of the Little Rascals and Our Gang comic shorts.
