American soldiers are pulling out of Afghanistan, but an organization called Nowzad Dogs has been making sure that these veterans can reunite with the dogs and cats they befriended in the midst of battle. Nearly 700 soldiers have reunited with foreign pets since the Nowzad Dogs organization became a reality in 2007. And the Nowzad Dogs non-profit organization doesn’t stop with securing Afghan pets for returned soldiers. It has opened a shelter and clinic in Afghanistan’s capital city of Kabul, with local residents, including four veterinarians, caring for displaced animals. Just like the Pocatello Animal Shelter, this operation spays and neuters dogs and cats. It also vaccinates them against rabies to reduce the stray animal population, which is huge in Afghanistan. Nowzad’s operation in Afghanistan also places dogs and cats in new homes in that country, just like the Portneuf Animal Welfare Society does for animals in our part of the world.
