Americans of both parties need to stop projecting their domestic partisan squabbles onto foreign policy. The White House strategy failed because it was not directed toward removing Assad and defeating ISIS: It was directed at preventing utter catastrophe before the US midterm election, and it almost accomplished that, off by one day. Now both parties need to get serious about the international crisis affecting the entire region between Algeria and Russia. These short-term fixes aimed only at domestic political salves are inviting global calamity. Putin and his allies in Damascus and Teheran must be confronted, and that means US Republicans and Democrats working together even if it kills them. Better them than large populations around the world.
