Americans’ waistlines continue to increase, and women’s are growing faster than men’s, according to new research. The average men’s waistline grew by 0.8 inches between 1999 and 2012, while the average women’s waistline increased by 1.5 inches, nearly twice as much. Measuring waist size is a simple way to estimate both total and intra-abdominal body fat, and it’s used in combination with other factors to predict heart disease risk. While there appears to be no one reason for the increase in waist size, experts say that losing weight would be the primary strategy for decreasing it.
