Amid the buzz about the Synod on Family Life, forgotten has been the upcoming Canonization of Pope Paul VI. In many ways, this almost seems fitting, being that most people associate Vatican II with St. John XXIII and often minimize the role of Paul VI who inheriting the challenging task of concluding the Council. Often criticized for his Encyclical Humanae Vitae, few can argue that Paul VIs warnings of the social impact of unrestricted contraction have come to pass: An increase of infidelity and divorce; the degradation of the dignity of women; Forced sterilization as a tool of suppression in the Third World; and An attitude of unlimited autonomy over ones own body, leading to a loss of seeing ones self being made in Gods image and likeness. As we celebrate the canonization of Paul VI, let us revisit this soon to be Saints life and writings so as to understand this often forgotten and misunderstood servant of God.
