Amidst todays more peaceful protests in Ferguson, the dust has - TopicsExpress

Amidst todays more peaceful protests in Ferguson, the dust has not settled and smoke still rises from the chaos and destruction of the community many of us once called home, and many of my friends still do. Im angry. Im sad. But mostly Im disgusted. Not that a predominantly black community could act this way. But that ANYONE could act this way. I said it once, and Ill say it again: rioting will solve nothing. It will merely drive a larger wedge into what seems to be a widening gap of race relations. I cant help but wonder in angst what will happen tonight as night falls over Ferguson. Will common sense blanket the masses? Or will the senseless one again run wild in the night? Ive seen some extreme hatred spewed over the past 48 hours through Facebook and Twitter. Whites hating blacks, blacks hating whites. I feel like Im getting a bleak glimpse of the 60s. Seeing my home fall apart hurts me to my core. In light of that, I offer the words of MLK: Violence never brings permanent peace. It solves no social problem: it merely creates new and more complicated ones. Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.
