Amir Fakhravar (Sia Vash)s comments on release of the CIA-torture report: Experts familiar with Iran’s ability to use propaganda to achieve its goals say the release of the torture report is precisely what the reclusive government needed. “They will use this as much as they can to continue their propaganda, their [efforts to] brainwash the Iraqi people, the Afghan people,” says Amir Fakhravar, an Iranian native who says he was jailed and tortured repeatedly in the country for his activism efforts. He now is a program director and research fellow at the Institute of World Politics in the nations capital. “The people, they hate the government,” he says of his fellow Iranians. “At the same time, this report will affect their worldview toward the U.S. We are looking at the U.S. as a role model. To see something like this coming out of the U.S., it is not an easy thing to digest for ordinary Iranian people.” America’s reputation for branding itself as a moral authority made it easier for average Iranians to see fault in their government’s claims that the U.S. operates as a dictatorship that abuses those under its control. The distinction between the two countries now has become blurrier, Fakhravar says. “I don’t know. Should I laugh? Should I cry?” he says of the social media response by Khamenei. “The guy whose hand is full of the blood of his own people is right now pointing it at the U.S.”
