Among the findings in ConnCAN’s analysis of Connecticut’s NAEP results are: Connecticut maintains worst-in-the-nation achievement gap: In several categories evaluated by ConnCAN, the Constitution State still has the worst-in-the-nation achievement gap. These categories include: low-income vs. non-low income (4th grade math, 8th grade math and reading), Hispanic vs. white (4th grade math and 8th grade math), and ELL vs. Non-ELL (8th grade math). Low-income, Black, and Latino students are on average three grade levels behind: In comparison to their non-low income or white peers, low-income, Black, and Latino students are on average three grade levels behind their peers. The achievement gap is even larger when comparing Non-ELL students to ELL students, which are on average five grade levels behind their peers. Math and reading scores stay relatively flat across the board: 4th grade reading scores saw the biggest gains -- 2 points -- while math scores increased by 1 point. 8th grade reading scores declined slightly -- .2 points -- and math scores decreased by 1.75 points. Low income students lag far behind their peers: In comparison to low-income students in other states, Connecticut’s low-income students are in the middle of the pack in reading, but among the lowest performing in math.
