Among the sins that are more difficult to see and treat is vanity. How does one know if he is vain? The signs of vanity are an impatience towards any criticism, a thirst for praise, a search for the easy way of doing things, and constant orientation towards other people. The vain person always asks, What will other people think of me? The righteous person, however, asks, What will God think of me? Vanity is powerful enough to change one into a completely different person so long as there is audience that might offer praise an approval. One who is normally angry might become as meek as a lamb simply for the possibility of being praised and commended by others... all while his true self remains hidden, broken, and unhealed.
