Amtrak testing new locomotives By Bill Poling Amtrak is testing its next generation of electric locomotives in Colorado and is expected to introduce them into the Northeast Corridor fleet in the fall. The 70 new locomotives will replace units that have been in service for up to 35 years. Designed by Siemens specifically for use on Amtrak’s electrified system in the Northeast, the new model, dubbed the Amtrak Cities Sprinter, will operate at speeds of up to 125 mph.
