Amy Lawrence is never likely to get a sales job with McDonalds or Burger King. The Year 6 Maungaturoto Primary School students eloquent condemnation of the fast food industry headed off nine other young orators to this weeks Northern Wairoa Schools Junior Speech Contest hosted by the Rotary Club of Dargaville. The young contestants from nine schools had to make a three- minute speech in front of an audience of about 80 including our members, family and friends plus judges Becky Matich, Lester Appleton and Liz Segrue. Amy took a poke at just about everything edible - or in her view - inedible about the industry, including asserting that chicken pieces were only 30 percent chicken and the other 70 percent was stuff that should be fed to your dog. She won the kauri Gough Shield which will be displayed at her school for a year. Second went to Danika Beardsall from Selwyn Park School for her presentation on Cats and Dogs. She outlined their involvement with humans and said while they could be a lot of work, it was worth it. She couldnt decide which she liked best. Nico Zwaans (Te Kopuru) and Tiakina Taufonua (St Josephs) tied for third. Nico looked at social media and concluded that while it had plusses, it was anything but social. Facebook has become a virtual baby sitter, he suggested. Tiakina tackled Cyber Bullying, explaining its effects and offering advice how to combat it. How would the bullies like it, she asked. Other contestants, in speaking order were: Zac Hopkins - Ruawai Primary (Gallipoli), Lara Brownie - Dargaville Intermediate (Superstitions), Briana West - Tangiteroria (Parents rights), Timothy Bickers - Ruawai College (Dumbest criminals), Melissa Marlow - Pouto (Is technology making us anti-social?), Colin Gilligan - Dargaville Intermediate (Middle ages). Becky Matich congratulated contestants on 10 awesome speeches and having the guts and gumption to speak in front of a room full of people. Heidi also showed that she is a very accomplished speaker and her English prowess, entertaining while the judges deliberated. She explained what the exchange involves and gave her verdict on New Zealand so far - a beautiful country and great people. Her advice about exchanges: Take the opportunity and make the most of it. Again, this years contest ended with an exceptional supper donated by Jos Home Cookery for whose support we are extremely grateful.
