Amy Ray with special guest Heather McEntire of Mount Moriah - TopicsExpress

Amy Ray with special guest Heather McEntire of Mount Moriah returns to the Variety Playhouse on Sunday, January 26th. In honor of MLK Day, here is a video of my song The Rise of the Black Messiah. This was written to honor the great civil rights activist Herman Wallace - one of the Angola 3. Wallace died on October 4, 2013, just three days after being released from prison. After decades of cruel conditions and a conviction that continues to be challenged by the courts, 71 year-old Wallace was given a compassionate release from prison due to his advanced liver cancer. This song was also inspired by the murder of Trayvon Martin and a book by Michelle Alexander called The New Jim Crow. You can read a letter I wrote about the song and get a free audio download of it on The Indigo Girls site. I wrote the song and the letter before Herman died: indigogirls/correspondence/2013/2013-07-31-a.html His death makes MLK Day more poignant than ever for me.
