Amy Update: See 8/22 and 8/26 postings: Due to the close-knit relationships between the local adoption professionals in the area, it was determined that Amy was not being very straightforward with us and certainly not being straight with another local adoption professional. Turns out that it is pretty clear that she had already been matched with another couple and was seeking and accepting funds before she came to us seeking to be matched and needing funds. Accepting funds and other assistance from two adoption entities/professionals at the same time is a felony. Generally speaking, it is difficult to prosecute adoption fraud cases. However, in the cases where the person has sought and accepted funds for her soon-to-be-born child from TWO or more sources AND there is a good paper trail, the odds of a successful prosecution are much higher. In this case, our level of financial assistance was fairly small (still a felony amount) but our time input was substantial. For the other adoption professional (an attorney), his couple is out several thousands of dollars, not to mention the fact that he had a couple already matched and eagerly waiting for the 2014 due date, so they will suffer financial and emotional damage. I actually spoke with Amy on Friday to see if there was any explanation for her actions and possible solutions to her obvious problems. She, unfortunately, compounded the problem by denying any wrongdoing. By denying any wrongdoing, her available options to fix the problem are very limited. MRM 9/8/14
