Amy V. Simmons Letters: Why must death be the catalyst? WHY IS IT when a death occurs things happen for a Band-Aid effect but problems at large still remain? So, it took six deaths at 22nd and Market for OSHA or L&I to crack down, begin an investigation and stop work at other sites in this region. Would it take a child to die in a school for funding to be restored? Would it take the death of a high-ranking police officer for a federal investigation of, or federal funding for, a broken police system to hire more, and to increase funding in other departments? Would it take massive amounts of deaths to overflow the streets of Rittenhouse Square for our 28.4 percent poverty level to be eliminated? Would it take someone to die and you attend the funeral for a person to become stronger in their religious faith, to be a better and decent person? Why does it take death in our society for a city to wake up? Why does it take a senseless death for immediate change? Something is seriously wrong, and maybe another death will make change occur for a better quality of life. Darisha K. Miller Philadelphia Daily News
