An 11th point of interest on the Half Marathon course is the Recreation Trail. Mile 12 and the end of mile 13 are run on the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail. This 18-mile trail stretches from Castroville to the north to Pacific Grove in the south. The trail was constructed over the Southern Pacific railroad tracks that serviced Cannery Row during the famed sardine era. Various Monterey Bay attractions line the trail, including Fishemans Wharf, Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, beaches, parks, and historic sites. During the stretch in Pacific Grove, runners will pass by a painted mural that depicts the history of Pacific Grove from the time of the Esselen Indians to the Victorian era.
