An 1871 Sandusky Ohio ghost-in-a-window. This was the beginning of what would be a series of cases of faces on windows that spread across Ohio and beyond. This is an excerpt from my book, The Face in the Window, which has a chapter on the Ohio flap. AN OPTICAL CURIOSITY Yesterday morning crowds of people were gathered on Wayne Street, opposite the Lake House [in Sandusky], and seemed very intently engaged in looking at some object in one of the windows of that hotel. On inquiry we learned that the object of their gaze was an optical curiosity in the form of a lady’s face, which had been photographically impressed upon one of the panes of glass in a window of the third story of the building. It appears that the room was occupied last summer by a family from New Orleans, and that the picture on the window pane is an exact likeness of a young lady, one of the members of that family. The photograph represents the lady in a sitting posture, looking out towards Water Street. A number of persons had seen the likeness, but supposed it to be a real lady in the room, and paid no particular attention to the matter, till Mr. Voltaire Scott [a local hotel owner] made the discovery that it was a photograph on the glass. Mr. Epler, of the Platt [photography] gallery, declares it to be a real photograph and a genuine curiosity. Looking from the inside of the room no outline can be discerned, nor is there any flaw in the glass--so that no doubt is left that the picture is the result of the chemical action of the light and moisture upon the glass. It is curious, at any rate. The picture is directly over the letter “E” in the word “Lake.”
