An Academic Librarians tidbits: Thursday, January 1, 2015 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! For those of you who are watching The Rose Parade in Pasadena, its 32 degrees outside. And for those of you in Northern Cal, New Years was welcomed in with a 5.1 earthquake in the ocean--nearest city was Ferndale. New Years Day is a legal holiday in all states and territories of the US and in most other countries. It is the worlds most widely celebrated holiday. Today is also New Years Dishonor List. Since 1976, Americas dishonor list of words banished from the Queens English. Overworked words and phrases such as cra-cra, foodie, swag, twerk, yolo, bae, polar vortex and skill set were chosen for 2014. Its Oatmeal Month. Oatmeal is an affordable, delicious and nutritious way to start the day, and it is also a versatile ingredient for cooking and baking your favorite recipes. Its Book Blitz Month. It focuses attention on improving authors relationships with the media in order to create a best-selling book. Its also Celebration of Life Month. The month of January being the first month of the year, signifies a new beginning, a new life, a new happiness in many lives each year. Bryce Canyon National Park was established today in 1928. Ellis Island opened today in 1892. Over the years more than 20 million individuals were processed through the stations. The island was used as a point of deportation as well: in 1932 alone, 20,000 people were deported from Ellis Island. When the US entered WWII in 1941, Ellis Island became a Coast Guard station. It closed Nov. 12,1954 and was declared a national park in 1956. After years of disuse it was restored, and in 1990 it was reopened as a museum. Also on this day in 1999, The euro, the common currency of members of the European Union, was introduced for use by financial institutions. The value of the currencies of the original 11 nations (Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain) was locked in at a permanent conversion rate to the euro. Estonia, Greece, Slovenia, Cyprus, Malta and Slovakia joined the eurozone later.On Jan 1,2002, euro bills and coins began circulating; other currencies were phased out as of Feb 28, 2002.
