An Altar Call is a Marriage Proposal...Not a Shotgun Wedding! For far too long we have heard messages about fearing God, turn or burn, and get right or get left! Weve had the hell scared out of us so we ended up at an altar praying a prayer to get fire insurance because the man in the pulpit could sell ice to an eskimo with his threats of if you died today where would you spend eternity speech. However, after the new believers discipleship class ended, we went back home and wondered what just happened, and how am I now changed? Months go by, and we experience very little transformation in our lives so we decide its time to rededicate and we respond (again) to yet another altar call! Does this merry-go-round sound too familiar? Yes, it does, and no one in the church wants to talk about it, so they just keep quiet and keep clapping as that same altar fills up each week with the same people who stood there six months ago. Lets examine this phenomenon more closely and see what a real altar call looks and sounds like. A real altar call is a marriage proposal! Yes, Jesus is asking, Will you marry Me, and allow Me to love you? It is an offer of the Fathers love, His healing, His peace, His protection, His comfort, and His beautiful Son in exchange for our broken hearts, our crushed spirits, our wrecked reality, and our absolute inability to ever become whole on our own! It is a revelation of an desperate love affair the Lord has with mankind, to marry them to the True Prince Charming for all of time and eternity! It is a revelation for us to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ! (Eph. 3:18) And to know (understand) this love that surpasses knowledge! (Eph. 3:19) Understanding this outlandish love will drive fear out of your heart, and will truly transform the worst of us into the very image of the One Who gave His life in exchange for ours! No shot gun weddings needed here! The Beautiful Son, the Darling of Heaven, reaching out to us with nail-scarred hands and a smile on His face, is more than enough to draw us into His embrace and keep us there forever! May this truth be seen through the eyes of love instead of fear! Never again may we see Him in the role of an abuser who bullies us into heaven with the threat of hell fire! But, let our eyes behold His beauty, His splendor, His Heroic act of the cross! See Him conquering death, hell, and the grave for us in order to gain a bride who will sit next to Him on His throne of grace and be forever loved and forever forgiven! May we be in awe of the Savior every single day! In knowing this, we will have no need of scare tactics to live right because this relationship is really real, and deeper than words can express! He desires you to know and believe the love He has for you! (1 John 4:16)
