An American friend of mine wanted to know if we were abreast of the Eric Garner situation in the UK. I explained that those in-the-know knew all about it. Then she asked me about race relations in the UK. I told her there was no real comparison between the UK and the US. If you were to count the number of mixed-race or dual-heritage people on the streets of the UK (particularly in London), you would have to assume the races get on very well! The UK had struggled for many years to unite the races but, as pirate radio gained momentum, it brought together black and white people in a very unique way. At those clubs, raves, all-dayers, all-nighters, weekenders and holidays, it really didn’t matter what shade you were; if you were into the music, you were part of the family. And that family had (and still have) a lot of fun! As George Clinton said, we are actually one nation under a groove and, compared to the US, we all get on pretty good!
