An American show that never really crossed the Atlantic - but still a lovely story, THE AMOS ‘N’ ANDY CHRISTMAS SHOW The 1952 Amos n Andy Christmas show came as close to encapsulating the two sides of Christmas as any show could. First we have Andy, broke as usual, but wanting to do something special for his God-daughter Arbadella. She has her heart set on a talking doll from the department store. Theres no way Andy could afford such an expensive gift, so he signs on with the store as Santas Helper. All afternoon he listens to children, both the naughty and the nice, telling him what they want for Christmas and handing out gifts from the store. His payment for this labour is, of course, the talking doll. Not wanting to take the credit he asks Arbadellas daddy (Amos) to be sure and tell her its from Santa Claus. Andy leaves and the second part of the story begins. Amos goes into Arbadellas room to say goodnight. She asks if she can have the radio on for a little while. He says okay and they listen to the Lords prayer being sung over the radio waves. Arbadella wishes they had some Christmas music and Amos assures her the prayer is the very best Christmas music anyone could have. Line by line Amos takes the prayer his daughter knows so well and tell her what it means to him. His re-telling of the Lord’s Prayer was first broadcast as part of the Amos ‘n’ Andy radio show in 1941. But the prayer which Jesus taught can surely never be told too many times! And we could do worse, each time we say it, to think on just how it applies to our lives. Separately but together the two friends demonstrate the two sides of Christmas; the giving of gifts from the heart, and a fresh appreciation of the gifts God gives to us every day. Put them together, and we surely have the perfect Christmas! Those Little Extras • The Amos ‘n’ Andy Show ran as a nightly radio serial between 1928 and 1943. Thereafter it developed into a sit-com. • Amos ‘n’ Andy made it to the silver screen in an RKO produced movie, Check And Double-Check in 1930. • When the program transferred to television the main roles, previously played by Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll, were taken on by Alvin Childress and Spencer Williams. • In 1988 The Amos ‘n’ Andy show was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. To The Gift-Giver Prayer is a confusing thing, Lord. Different people have different ways and different routines. Lord, help us make sure our prayer, in whatever form we send it, never becomes routine. And thank you for the perfect example, which we might do well to think about and apply, line by line, to our lives as we say it. From The Gift-Giver And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
