An Aphex a day: We Are The Music Makers A thick, deep bass - TopicsExpress

An Aphex a day: We Are The Music Makers A thick, deep bass melody lazily wobbles along, followed shortly by a sample from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory declaring We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of the dreams, which would become the anthem of bedroom music producers the world over. Soon, a gentle hip hop break drops in, accompanied by a couple of twinkly melodies playing off of each other. From there on out, things evolve organically in this frosty cool dub-wise head-nodder made for chin-strokers. That said, much of the album runs along like this, in a simple, almost minimal fashion, as Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is perhaps the most accessible Aphex Twin album ever released, and a good starting point for folks new to the artist (or fartist, according to his latest albums nonsensical press release). According to Warp records, its an album that should be in every persons home, and FACT Magazine has named it the greatest album of the 1990s. Not bad at all, considering much of the album was recorded in Richard D. James youth (he started recording tracks at the age of twelve), straight to cassette tape. The compilation was intended to be heard only by a handful of friends, but it eventually made its way to Belgian techno label Apollo, and as they say, the rest is history.
