An Article by a Fan Shamila Benson Why Dhoni holds such a special place in our hearts..?? From a goal keeper to the most successful wicketkeeper Captain of Indian Cricket Team: His journey in Cricket started nearly a decade ago when he played for the first time against Bangladesh & I feel so sorry that I missed that match. But that was the first & last time when I missed a match in which Dhoni played. Ever since then, I can proudly say Ive witnessed the zero becoming an infinity. I wont go much in his history as you can find that on Wikipedia, if you are really interested in knowing him that much. But the story is quite remarkable. He used to play as a goalkeeper in his football team & someone noticed him that time. A funny thing about him is that he hasnt graduated up til now, because he got selected in the team when he was supposed to give his exams. If hed been a nerd, I can say for sure he could have refused but here in India, cricket is a religion. From the beginning when I used to watch him play, I saw that he didnt had the class which other top guns like Dravid & Tendulkar who were in the same time had, but then he also hadnt got such a great training. From then up til now, he still plays with his own unique style, not a slight change at all. And guess what, his unique style of hitting shots has got him so many fans all around the world. He is a great player & it isnt that he has evolved with time over these years. He has been the same guy, cool & calm, the ultimate Thinktank. Pardon me, if you think Im overpraising him, but he deserves it all. Leading India to so many wins without an ounce of arrogance: The Cricket world has got many brilliant players like Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh, Sachin Tendulkar & many others but only Dhoni fits in all of their shoes. He plays remarkably in the death overs & all bowlers fear to bowl him in the last few overs as they know, if he resolves to hit then he shall hit it. Whenever he gets out, he hardly waits for the umpires judgment & walks back to the pavilion. We for sure know, as long as he is on the crease , he will save the day for India. He has given India almost all ICC trophies, has broken several records & defeated many countries on their own homeground. You can never see him involved in sledging. He remains very calm & composed almost all the time. He performs well off the field too: He did the most secretive marriage without attracting much media attention. We got to know about his wife only a day before the marriage. He married his childhood school friend, Sakshi. He is a lover of bikes & if you have a look at his bike collection youll be stunned. Almost all heavy muscled. His favorite is quite similar to mine, any guesses, its the Harley Davidson. One of his friends recently died of some seriousness illness & he would have died sooner as he couldnt afford the medical fees but Dhoni paid it for him & got him under medical treatment, though he couldnt be saved. He has earned a lot & in the beginning of his career, he was almost always among the top earners in India. But he never showed off, not for once. He pays his taxes regularly. He loves food. He has great friends all around the globe. There was once this great coincidence when Chennai Super Kings was playing against Mumbai & Michael Vaughan, former captain of England tweeted that hed love to see Dhonis Helicopter shot on Malingas bowling & it was as if Dhoni read it in the middle of the field as the wish was granted immmediately. Why is he the best? A completely clean guy with no black stain on career A genius not only in the field but in real life too. Extremely humble & has sailed his team through tough times Respected the senior players of the team at the same time was very interactive with the juniors. Sweet love marriage He is a lover of speed & bikes ( & I bet most of us are too). Champion not only for India but for Chennai Super Kings When he began playing cricket, he used to have big brown colored hair & everyone liked it so much that it became a new hair style all around India. Even the then Pakistan Prime Minister Parvez Musharaff, praised his hairstyle & told him not to cut it but looks like Dhoni gave him a deaf hair & cut his hair soon after winning the T20 World Cup. He also plays for the Chennai Super Kings as their Captain & Wicketkeeper in the Indian Premier League & has given them the trophy twice back to back & one CL T20 trophy too He has led India for so long now that we cant imagine the future without him, but he is so unpredictable in these matters that you cant say. From what I know of MSD, he will retire after 2015 World Cup, till then at least he will keep us entertaining in this gentlemans game called cricket. His retirement will be very heartbreaking because for what he has done, we can think of Indian Cricket without him & we cannot find another one like him. He is those geniuses who come only once in a century. But for the present, hes still there & as long as hes there you can always feel your nerves while you watch him take the opponent team. Final words for Captain Cool: He has been criticized a lot in the past when the team lost back to back series on the foreign soil. He took the heat for all that & has shown faith on many guys in his team. He gave a proper adieu to all the veterans like Ganguly, Kumble, Tendulkar, Dravid & Laxman. The sad fact about all this is that he has the most haters in his own country which is quite natural as the more great a person is the more enemies he has. There were some players breaking the team from inside & he showed them the way outside of the team. He plays a lot of cricket & hardly gives rest to himself. Isnt all this not enough to love this guy? I mean he has brought us so much that now we expect him to deliver more & more, win every series he plays & let India remain on top of world rankings forever. HE gave us hope & victory when we had none & I know for sure he wont get anything in return for all greatness that he has brought to us. But leader like him dont complain, they just pass away in the shadow & if one thing I love about MSD then it is his reaching the top from nothing. Makes me believe I can do the same.
