An Australian Orthopaedic Team has been in Samoa for the past couple of weeks providing diagnosis and surgical treatment for Samoan patients from around the country. The team have operated and treated patients of various ages with different orthopaedic needs at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital and in the process provided hands on training for the local surgeons and operating theatre nurses. The visiting team consists of two Surgeons: Mr Chris Harris and Mr Brett Jackson; Anaesthetist Dr. Rodney Green as well as Nurse Kim Grace, all of whom are medical volunteers that provided their services free of charge. The visit is delivered under the Pacific Islands Program (PIP), a program managed by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons on behalf of the Australian Government. The Orthopaedic Surgery teams have been coming to Samoa on an annual basis for more than seven years and the program is an ongoing collaboration between Australia and Samoa that will continue for years ahead.
