An EU border guard has on average just 12 seconds to decide whether the traveller in front of them is legal or not, or to assess if their documents are genuine. For tens of thousands of people each year, refusal at the border post can change life. The border guard’s decision, in other words, can have the profoundest consequences for the individual standing before them – and it has never been more important to get this process right. Those 12 seconds may also be the only time that a victim of human trafficking comes into contact with law enforcement authorities before they descend into the ‘underground’ where the darkest kinds of exploitation can occur.
