An Evening with Fred Astaire (1958). Even though this was promoted as a live broadcast, the legend is that only the lengthy opening number (with music written especially for the show by Irving Berlin) and this medley and closing number (shown here) were the only segments actually broadcast live. One take, with many fetching details for Astaire fans like me. Like when he fumbles the lyrics to I Wont Dance, the way he grunts when the cane lands in his hand, his fudging his lines a little (his nervous stammer creeps in a bit), the way he keeps glancing at the countdown clock off camera, and most of all…a mistake! Under the closing credits hes doing some tricks with a handkerchief and it slips from his grasp and he drops it. He snatches before it hits the ground like a cat pouncing at a mouse. Alvin Stoller, the drummer for the show, caught the slip and delivers a big rim shot. https://youtube/watch?v=D6ZsZBKZQcw
