An OHVA mom shared the following poem her son created last week from her blog, creativityinspiredbylife/blog.html. It is just one of the many ways our parents use creative approaches to teach their children! I am a big fan of integrating creative arts when possible, I believe art unlocks the door to learning for many children. Last week in school, my youngest son was learning how to identify and use unusual plural spellings. The exercise focused on singular words ending with the letter f, and changing the words to the correct plural form. For example, the plural of calf is calves. Throughout the exercise my son constantly repeated the rule, “Change the f to v and add es.” My son does not share my love of writing, so he was not thrilled about having to write sentences. In order to make the assignment more fun—and encourage a little creative writing—I decided that together, he and I would create a poem using the following words: calf, calves, leaf, leaves, hoof, and hooves. Here is the poem we came up with: I have a calf She has four calves She thinks are way too fat, She thinks that Work and exercise Will surely take care of that. She finds a pile of leaves and kicks a leaf between the trees, She kicks a hoof too High, four hooves fall Out from underneath.
