An Ode to my Son As your slight frame Runs down the dirt hill And your pale face Shines brightly in the sun I am reminded of your struggles Your courage, your strength Your ability to defy the odds Your innocence. Stay strong always, son For though life is As short as this poem It is a blessing In the most clever of disguises. When you were born I was so lost. I found it hard to connect with you Because you were like handling A very fragile doll And I hated myself For not being able to fix you. After a few months I settled into The Vodka Motel And I became very distant Not just because my job Was 71 miles from our door, But because I was scared So I hid inside the bottle Tried to drink my fears away But they only became more poignant And multiplied like flies In the fetid pool of garbage That had become my Consciousness. At some point, I knew the jig was up I had brought home Too much bacon And a revolt of my inner circle Appropriately occurred And my life flashed Before my eyes like death Visiting early On holiday like Joe Black. I have been many things, son And some of them I can rightly counsel you To never be: I have been a liar But falsehoods breed only darkness And I struggle with honesty Even as this pen strikes the page; I have been a thief But nothing is worth The price of trust And it is a commodity That I lack to this day; I have been an addict But no substance can replace The texture or meaning Of this life like a clear signal To the Heavens above. Some things you may heed Some you may not Depending on your age And where you’re at in the world But I imagine someday you’ll read this And get a distant reflection Of a man in your past During a time that you will Probably not remember At least not more than the pictures Make the memories real. Each moment is so precious If I have ever been cross with you Please do not bear it For I am but a man As are you And we will walk through this life together As long as we are meant to.
