An Open Day will be held at Thebarton Police Barracks this Sunday (27 April) to mark the end of 12 months of commemorative events acknowledging 175 years of police service in South Australia. South Australia Police - established by Governor Hindmarsh on 28 April 1838 - is the oldest centrally-controlled police service in Australia. The Open Day, at the barracks on Gaol Road, Thebarton, from 10am to 1pm will feature displays covering: - Specialist police activities - Police horse stable tours at 10.15 and 11.15 (for 10-15 mins) - Dog Operations Unit displays at 10.30am and 12.30 (for 30 mins) - The police museum - Historical police vehicles and motor cycles There will also be the opportunity for young cyclists to test their skills on the track at the Road Safety Centre, next to the Barracks, which will be open for the occasion. The Band of the South Australia Police will also be entertaining the crowd with performances at 10.15am and 12.15pm. A BBQ and refreshments will be available at a small cost. Those coming by car are urged to consider parking at Bonython Park and walking to the Gaol Road entrance to Thebarton Barracks.
