An Open Letter to Cook County Retirees and Seasonal Residents - TopicsExpress

An Open Letter to Cook County Retirees and Seasonal Residents (Please share): Dear Neighbors, as you may be aware there is an imminent likelihood that North Shore Community Hospital will no longer offer planned births and it is on this matter than I am asking for your support. Many people, at least 50 (perhaps many of you!), attended a meeting at the hospital on Thursday, 1/22 and others have submitted comments and made calls to Hospital Board members. There will be another information session at the hospital this Wednesday, 1/28, from 6-8 PM in the “large Classroom” before the Hospital board meets for a vote on Friday, January 31st at 9 AM. Additionally, the City Council allows public comments at the beginning of their meeting on Wednesday at 4:30 and the County Board meets Tuesday evening, all of whom could benefit from hearing your views on the topic. Many in the community are of the sentiment that it is critical to continue offering birth services locally for a variety of reasons. Not only is it an essential women’s health service but it is also a keystone in maintaining all manner of diversity in our community, most obviously, age diversity. A healthy community is one that can support people through the lifespan. If we lose access to birth services locally, we will likely lose our ability to build or maintain the segment of our population in their childbearing years. This is not just a problem of child bearing women! Many, many goods and services in the county are powered by then engine of working people in their childbearing years. Please understand that retiring here with a robust retirement package from an urban career is a very different experience than living out one’s working days in this economy. Most of us are making significant professional and financial sacrifices in order to carve out a living in this incredible place. We want to keep doing it! And we want to keep being your carpenters, foresters, nurses, servers, grocers, mechanics, fire fighters, chefs, dishwashers, food service personnel, hospice providers, convenience store workers, dog sitters, garbage collectors, artists, etc. To do so we also need to keep taking care of ourselves with child care, continuing education, schools, social services, dental care and health care including child birth resources. Please join us in keeping our community strong and voice your support for maintaining childbirth services in Cook County.
