An Open Letter to my Grandson Jase: Dear Jase, I fell in - TopicsExpress

An Open Letter to my Grandson Jase: Dear Jase, I fell in love with your Ya Ya all over again when I watched her play with you on Christmas Day. You and Olivia had finished opening your small toys and games inside when dad gave you a letter from none other than Santa Claus. Santa Claus observed that you and Olivia had been good all year and that your “Big Gift’ would not fit in the house. He and his elves had assembled a trampoline in the backyard and it was waiting for you. I immediately became the official chronicler and turned on my I Phone as a video camera. I watched with great delight as Ya Ya took you by the hand led you down the steps and into the back yard. Your face lit up when you saw the trampoline Santa and his elves had put together for you and your sister. You got in, she removed your shoes and then you had a moment. Not the good kind; the sad kind, the kind where the cameras stop rolling. You wanted to jump, but the fear was overwhelming. Not really a big deal in the history of the world, but a pretty big deal in the 2 ½ year history of Jase. Ya Ya immediately got on board and came to your rescue. Too old for a trampoline? Something tells me Ya Ya will never be too old for anything. She is the youngest woman I know. Like her Aunt Lura she will be young at heart and young in mind well into her 90’s. Fifty’s is being a spring chicken in Ya Ya years. No, the bigger challenge was the fashion challenge. Ya Ya was sporting her designer jeans, Winter white pea coat, with 3 inch heels on her fashionable ankle boots. Off came the boots, in jumped Ya Ya to save your day. She took you by both hands, stood with you, and began to smile at you and encourage you with words you couldn’t resist. Within minutes you had conquered your fears. You were flipping, running, bouncing, and laughing with your sister. Ya Ya single handedly turn your defeat into victory. Son, do you know how many times I have been in your shoes? For 38 years she has made me more of a man. Since November 4, 1976, she has been the woman behind the man. For a lifetime, she has been turning my defeats into victories. She is the “Wind beneath my Wings,” “The beautiful face without a name,” “The Ginger Rogers of my life who does everything I do except backwards and in heels,” “My second fiddle,” “my Scottie Pippin,” “My Tonto,” “My Robin,” “My soulmate, mentor, partner, coach, cheerleader, and partner in ministry, God’s love gift for life.” Like your dad, your uncle Jason, and I; we all have become better men because of her encouragement and investments in our lives. Like the thousands of other breathless moments she has given me over the years, I fell in love with your Ya Ya all over again. Merry Christmas son.
