An SOS reader writes, I have 2 intact sons. My younger son (18 months) was diagnosed with grade 2 bilateral vesicoureteral reflux when he was 6 months old. Basically, both of the ureters from his kidneys have kinks in them right before the bladder so the urine goes back into the kinks instead of out sometimes and because it just sits there it can become infected and causes a lot of UTIs. In the time since his diagnosis the longest he went without a UTI was 3 months which was about 4-5 months ago. He has only had 1 bladder infection but the UTI is caused by two bacteria that are basically swapping. Hes on daily antibiotics because he SHOULD outgrow it. We have an AMAZING pediatrician that shares our beliefs about circumcision, she has never forcefully retracted him, but recently she has been having us slowly retract him without causing pain because the bacteria is from stool getting in his penis. Unfortunately, we are at that discussion now. We have been referred to a urologist and our appointment is in 1 week. Today I had a long talk with our pediatrician and we agreed that we want to make sure that he hasnt escalated to Grade 3 reflux before circumcision is discussed. Were told that this surgery would stop the UTIs completely. We are unable to get the reflux tests done until the UTI clears because they could push the infection to the kidneys if he has one. Im okay with circumcision if it is truly medically necessary, but it still breaks my heart, and theres been so much crying today... Has anyone gone through something similar and have any advice?
