An absolutely amazing, and apocalyptic, moment in American political history. Stone and Kuznicks documentary was eye opening about this episode, as it has been tended to be lost in the post war liberalism of the kind related to Kennedy and the policies of Centrist containment. The emerging counter narrative of late, expanded here by Kuznick is thus that the history of the conservative revolution sold to us by new democrat apologists is, while not false, then at the least disingenuous, as the slide toward conservatism does no then hinge to Reagan, the new Republicans and what else but is, while these things were true, also a self inflicted wound via the implosion of the Democratic Party at the 1944 Convention. The strict, ideological absolutes so embedded in the Cold War mentality which lingers on in the Republic of Fear pandered via Fox News et al, begins with the collapse of the REAL center here, in the last year of World War II. Can we EVER get back to such a vision again? Perhaps. The long shadow of the Republic of Fear is increasingly getting old and the electorate of the country is changing, demographically, and its increasingly once more urban society leaning toward traditional progressive values, even while the two parties remain as married to corporatist power as ever. Yet even here, the very weight of dissatisfaction is making itself apparent via the popularity of such outsider politicians as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, both who plug into traditionally Progressive, and more over Populist, values. So, perhaps change for the better is in the wind. Though, recollect, it took almost three quarters of a century for the country to swing this far conservative. It will be a long swing back and we will have to work patiently, knowing many more hard knocks will come along the way.
