An academically excellent boy went to apply for a manager position in a company. He passed the interviews. The director wanted to do a last interview and to make a decision. During the last interview the director noticed that the academic achievements of the boy were excellent all the way, from the secondary school to the postgraduate research, never had a year when he did not score. So out of curiosity the director asked the boy, “Did you obtain any scholarships?”. “No” the boy replied. After this a conversation started between the boy and the director. Director: Was it your father who paid for your school fees? Boy: My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid my school fees. Director: Where does your mother work? Boy: My mother works as clothes cleaner. She visits houses, collect cloths and clean them The director requested the youth to show his hands. When the director saw his hands they were smooth and perfect. Therefore he asked the boy. Director: Have you ever helped your mother in washing the clothes? Boy: Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me. Director: I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mothers hands and then see me tomorrow morning. When the boy went back home, he requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to him. The boy cleaned his mothers hands. While he was cleaning his mother’s hands his tears fell down. It was for the first time he noticed that his mothers hands were so wrinkled and that there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when he was cleaning them. The boy realized that it were these pairs of hands that worked day and night to pay for his school. The bruises in the mothers hands were the source for his graduation and academic excellence. That night he helped his mother, cleaned the dishes and washed clothes with her. After this the mother and her son also talked for a very long time. Next morning, the boy came to the director. The Director noticed tears in the eyes of the boy. He asked, “So now tell me what you have done and learned yesterday at your home? Boy: I cleaned my mothers hand and also helped her in the work. Director: Please tell me your feelings now. Boy: I know now what appreciation is. Without my mother, there would not be the successful me today. By working together and helping my mother, I realize now how difficult and tough it is to get something done. I appreciate the importance and value of family relationship. Director: This is what I am looking for in my manager. I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of others to get things done and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life. You are hired. Moral: A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted, would develop entitlement mentality and would always want himself to be the first. He would be ignorant of his parents efforts. When he starts work, he assumes that every person must listen to him and when he becomes a manager, he would never know the sufferings of his employees and would always blame others. He would grumble and would be full of hatred and prejudice. Try to earn much for your kid, let them live in a big house, eat a good meal, learn piano, watch a big screen TV etc but when you are doing some work please let them experience it. After a meal, let them wash their plates and bowls together with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you do not have money to hire a maid, but it is because you want to love them in a right way. You want them to understand, no matter how rich their parents are, one day their hair will grow gray. And the most important thing is that your kid must learn to appreciate the efforts of others and learn the ability to work with others as a team to get things done.
