An acquaintance told me that he was picking up his children from school on Halloween day because theyd be having their Halloween party and our family doesnt celebrate Halloween. I didnt ask why, but I suppose its because they think it violates their Christian beliefs. Dont they know that Halloween means The Eve of All Hallows, and that its a Christian holiday that was grafted onto the earlier pre-Christian holdiay of Samhain and the autumnal equinox? In contrast, I got this message from my neighborhood Episcopal Church: The calendar of the Churchs year follows closely the cycle of natures seasons, and for that calendar, too, November is a month of contrasts. It is no mistake that as our days turn longer, as our season shifts, this month is ushered in with the great Feast of All Saints as we celebrate the fellowship of the entire Church, remembering those who went before and all in our present time. But then, the very next day, the mood is changed for the more subdued and solemn observance of All Souls as the Church remembers all the faithful departed. Episcopalians rock!
