An anonymous mom needs some support: Christmas vent! Anyone elses kids act their worst when around others, even on Christmas when surrounded by judgemental family members? My son has ADHD and he was actually on his best behavior (medicated), but his 6 year old sister was a nightmare. I suspect she has bipolar, ODD, or some other mood or personality disorder. So much of my energy has been on getting my sons ADHD diagnosed and controlled that I havent had the chance yet to get her evaluated yet. She can be super sweet and fun to be around, then her personality changes at the drop of a hat, and she suddenly becomes a different child. My parents and siblings dont understand that she doesnt respond to typical discipline. In addition to the looks from them, they think she needs to know whos in charge and will chime in on how to discipline her. My dad gets so frustrated and often starts (verbally) disciplining her himself, which only makes matters worse! This really causes a great deal of stress and makes me just want to stay home at all times away from family and friends to avoid the judgement from others. I feel alienated and alone in this process of parenting my challenging children. Im in the process of reading The Explosive Child, which points out that the child is NOT a product of bad parenting, but its hard not to feel like a lousy parent. My husband and I have a pretty happy life and have created a very normal household for our family, but the stress of parenting my kids is certainly taking its toll. Im now depressed and have anxiety issues myself. This parenting business is HARD!
