An answer about Thompson, from one of his supporters, Randi Weingarten: "I know all the front runners very well -- and like them very much -- but for me its a no brainer: Thompson has the education and financial experience from being President of the NYC Bd of Ed and NYC comptroller; the courage from being the only one to actually run against Michael Bloomberg last time around; and the compassion and grit as an African American, the grandson of Caribbean immigrants and the son of a teacher to know how to both stop racial profiling, while taking on gun violence and the need to keep our city safe. On a personal level, he was our boss, at the Bd of Ed for a time while I was UFT President and he fought for children, and respected teachers, and moved an agenda of a focus on reading, turning around struggling schools, funding and real accountability."
