An arctic front will move across the region Wednesday night and establish cold air across the region Thursday through Friday. Meanwhile, strong flow in the upper levels of the atmosphere will carry disturbances from southwest to northeast across the region. The disturbances will likely generate wintry precipitation in the cold air behind the arctic front, especially late Thursday through Friday. At this time, mainly rain, possibly mixed with sleet is forecast Thursday. The precipitation will likely transition to freezing rain, sleet and then snow Thursday night through Friday, as the invading colder air deepens from northwest to southeast across the region. Forecasters say while it is still too soon to forecast specific amounts, given the expected transitional nature of the precipitation, the confidence is increasing in the area seeing a respectable amount of precipitation accumulation. Forecasters add that this will likely translate into winter weather impacts overnight Thursday through Friday.
