An art exhibition illustrating songs; paintings as visual accompaniments, as storyboards for music: can this be? Yes, indeed it can, if the works in question stem from the farthest reaches of coastal north Arnhem Land, from remote Goulburn Island and its surrounding country. For this is the home of the vast cycle of "gossip songs" created and performed by the Mawng people of the region and their Kunwinjku neighbours: a corpus of songs, stories and attendant paintings first recorded for outsiders more than a half century ago by pioneering anthropologists Ronald and Catherine Berndt, and only now presented to the wider world at the museum in Perth that holds their collections and bears their name.
