An article in The New Daily yesterday has outlined the threat Australias community legal centres face from amended Federal Government funding contracts which direct them not to use taxpayer funds for policy and advocacy activities. In July the Federal Government amended the funding contracts of 140 legal centres across the country, not only dramatically reducing their funding but also putting limits on how they spend what’s left. Those limits include demands that they not use taxpayer funds on activities related to policy and advocacy work. Last month, Liana Buchanan the Executive Officer of the Federation of Community Legal Centres, spoke of the dangers of the new limitations at an event in Melbourne.
