An article in yesterdays News Journal detailed the importance of concussion testing in student athletes. We could not agree more! For the third year, BSD is providing free ImPACT testing for students at our three high schools who are participating in high impact sports. ImPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is a computerized test that is given to athletes prior to the start of their sports season - like a pre-season physical of the brain. The non-invasive test is designed like a video game and tracks such information as memory, reaction time, speed, and concentration. In the event an athlete is injured and a concussion is confirmed, a re-test can help athletic training staff, the school nurse, and the students personal physician determine when it is safe for the student to return to his or her sport. High impact sports, as defined by American Academy of Pediatrics, include football, field hockey, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, wrestling, volleyball, and lacrosse.
