An early landscape pencil drawing from 1980, shot with a digital camera the other day, drawn on the back of a piece of matboard--a unique, smooth, soft drawing surface (not quite as anti-archival as newsprint). Did a few images like this years ago, but began to think I shouldnt be satisfied with just imagined impressions of places visited. That summer and several following ones, I devoted much time to sketching in the field, the sketch here an example. Imagining landscapes and compositions benefited eventually (in my opinion)--moderated by a more ingrained sense of what was not too over-the-top. When the opportunity to do paleo-work came along, distinguishing between visions of the Gods entering Vahalla and just pedestrian Naturalism was a help (though Vahalla still beckons).
