An edited article I did a couple of years ago for a magazine - Baron Christian Christiansonn; It is late July 1361, the King of Denmark and Conqueror of Visby is His Majesty Valdemar IV Attadage, Christopher, Duke of Lolland is the Crown Prince of Denmark. My patron Saint is St Ansgar, of Denmark. And I, Baron Christian Christiansonn, is His Majesty’s emissary to the Holy Father Pope Innocent VI, in Avignon, France, and to King Edward III of England, were Edward of Woodstock, the Black Prince, is Prince of Wales. And finally, a frequent traveler, to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and to its ruler the Duke Gediminas. I enjoy the Grand Dukes company, as he is old fashioned in so many ways. When I am at home in Odense, Denmark, I oversee the ship building and trade centered in the city. Baron Christian Christiansonn, wears the finest of Medieval European fashion, fine silks, stunning jewelry, handsome boots, and hats adorned with amazing feathers. One of his favorite is the most wonderful Red Silk, shot with Black Coathardy, trimmed in hundreds of tiny pearls, and Garnet beads, tapered to fit his fine male form, tight Black Hose on his manly thighs, and red thigh high boots that many are afraid to be seen in public wearing. His bullock dagger is a sign of his virility, and style, causing many a fine lady to blush, but also be intrigued by him. The Baron’s Treasury is a sign of his wealth, and standing in the world of Kings, Princes, and Noble men. His hunting cloths are of fine Red Noil Silk, decorated with a Folly Sash of large bells, and worn, with knee high Black Boots. The Baron’s one concession to piety is to keep his hair cut short, unlike many of those vain, even arrogant Englishmen who grow their hair long. My household in Odense has many attendants, overseen by my fine steward, Stein. When I am at home I like to rise early, maybe about 8 in the morning, unless I have the company of a beautiful woman, then I may lay in until well after 10. When I rise, I bath and dress, before a great fire in my bedchamber, in my fine, bright Court clothes, and always wearing a stunning dagger. I will then have a light breakfast, of Fish, eggs, fruit, fine white bread, and ale, in the main hall. Then I will deal with letters from His Masjesty the King, most diligently, as I truly love my King. If I receive a letter from the Holy Father in Avignon, I may leave it until after the midday meal as I will wish to enjoy my food. I will then go into the city where I will attend to the ship building needs of my King, and see to it that the Taxes have been collected and recorded accurately, and speak to merchants, and good towns folk. I shall go to the Cathedral of “St Canute” and pray, to St Ansgar, my Patron Saint, and St Canute, before returning home. The midday meal will start with a leek soup, then a poached trout, with a mustard sauce. This will be followed by finest of Venison roasts, with vegetables cooked in butter, a Pork pie will follow, then a Cherry Pottage, enjoyed with fine wine from France. After this meal, I will ride out to the shores with companions and hounds and enjoy the sport of Falconry, a sport both His Majesty and I enjoy. This I will do until the sun sets, and the light is fading, I will ride with my companions, home to my great house. Where, God willing we will feast well into the night, enjoying all the finest of foods and wine. Sadly my late wife (an Italian) left me with no children, but I am well blessed, my Norwegian mistress, Freya (a fine woman) who has given me a fine, strong son, Erik, and my King has a kindness to me and allows me to visit Norway to see them often.
