An email on LAMBPLAN from Authur Gates down under: LAMBS, The following comment re marketing is interesting; in summary it says something like this. `` We do not convince people to buy an idea or thing, but rather lead them to want a service or item. Whether you are selling rams or apples or motorcars, people often buy emotionally, then use facts and data to confirm their decisions.`` If that is right, how does one trigger the emotional aspects of buying rams with superior performance and no coloured felt around its neck ? Is this why or how many of the high priced stud rams are sold without data, BUT a strong background of red, white and blue felt. Red white and blue on an animal and or a stud name backed by regular advertising, helps trigger the emotion. Both the show judge and the competing bidders enhance the desire and the emotion; AND provide the confirmation as the price increases. He must surely be a good animal !! His half sib was reserve champion at XYZ show. Are these marketing points relevant to selling rams which can improve producers` bottom line, OR, are there still large numbers of lamb producers who don`t believe LAMBPLAN can predict animal performance, so have no desire or `emotion` to search for and buy performance tested rams ? How many champions at major shows have been shown to lack `performance` when their progeny are tested ? Too many I suggest. If so, more money needs to be spent on `on farm demonstration trials with more follow up extension `. Has any attempt been made to calculate the cost to the whole lamb industry of significant numbers of stud and flock rams being sold and used for lamb production with no breeding values ? There have been several trials which demonstrated the costs to individual producers of using untested, compared to tested rams with known breeding values. It should be possible to extrapolate and perhaps estimate the costs to the whole industry of guesstimation and red white and blue felt. The result might trigger the need for more expenditure on the functional aspects of lamb production. Arthur Gates - Pollambi Terminals - Armidale
