An email reply from Senator Nelson on the IRS debacle: Dear Mr. - TopicsExpress

An email reply from Senator Nelson on the IRS debacle: Dear Mr. Taylor: Thank you for contacting me about political bias at the IRS. I agree that these practices are indefensible. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, I questioned IRS officials at an investigative hearing about how we got into this mess. Part of the problem is that the IRS has strayed far from the plain language of the law regarding tax-exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(4) of the tax code. The law clearly says that these tax-exempt groups are strictly prohibited from engaging in political activity. Over the years, however, the IRS created loopholes allowing them to do so. The IRS is in a fix because these loopholes put it in a position of having to pick and choose the political groups that qualify for tax-exempt status. Ultimately, the IRS must take responsibility and change its regulations to make sure the letter of the law is being followed. Please be assured that I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Senate to ensure that the IRS administers our tax laws properly and without bias. Do not hesitate to contact me again if you have any future concerns. Sincerely, Bill Nelson
