An estimated 121 million people today are living with depression, which means that each of us loves or has loved someone who has been subject to at least one depressive episode in their lifetime. As someone who has experienced crippling depression as well as anxiety for many of my few years on this Earth, I can tell you that you will never truly understand it until you have experienced it. And when you are experiencing it, you will not understand it. You will not understand why you are so tired all of the time. You will not understand how this fatigue seems to emanate from your heart. You will not understand why everybody answers your questions with, Cheer up!, or You just need to be more grateful!, or If you tried to, youd feel better. It is much easier to recognize my depressive episodes in retrospect. Often, when they come about, I cant recognize the symptoms. On the rare occasion that I do realize whats happening to me, that is my saving grace: the knowledge that there is nothing wrong with me, that this is simply my battle. If you are currently suffering from depression, be it mild or severe, your first or your most recent episode, I plead with you to seek help. It is so easy to get caught up in the shame that is associated with mental illness. It is so easy to hide yourself away. Dont. You cant. It is imperative for your very survival that you tell somebody who loves you what you are going through. It is imperative that you keep talking about it until you can find someone that will help you. Most importantly, it is imperative that you remember that it is your goal to survive.
