An event for the Melbourne cycling community to raise funds and gather food, water, clothing and other supplies/necessities to be sent to the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Many families have been left without homes, food or clothing whilst suffering fear, pain and the loss of loved ones and belongings. Were inviting cyclists to bring their road bikes and pedal along Beach Road (to Black Rock or Mordialloc) in solidarity with the Filipino people. It will be a 7.30am start. Location to be confirmed. We would like to encourage all riders to donate to the Australian Red Cross (redcross.org.au/typhoon-haiyan-2013.aspx) or Oxfam Australia (https://oxfam.org.au/my/donate/typhoon-haiyan-yolanda) or any of the organisations listed here: abc.net.au/appeals/ If you prefer to send goods instead, please bring any of these items: CANNED/BOTTLED FOOD: in easy open cans please - there are no can openers. DO NOT PACK NOODLES OR ANYTHING THAT NEEDS WATER. There is no water and electricity so it is impossible to consume this kind of food. BOTTLED WATER/JUICE/MILK MEDICINE: Most especially basic medicines such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, antiseptic creams, water purifying tablets, gastrolyte, ventolin. Also if possible, including medicine for surface wounds (bandages) as many have been wounded because of the debris and fallen rooftops. CLOTHING/FOOTWEAR (e.g. thongs): Clothes that are suitable for the Philippine (tropical) climate. Do not give clothes that are too thick. Also, please do not give clothes that are too revealing - something you cannot wear in an evacuation center. TOILETRIES (SOAP/TOOTHBRUSHES/TOOTHPASTE/ETC) : Anti-bacterial soap, not cosmetic soap please. CANDLES AND MATCHES (or self-powered torches): Theres no electricity for a minimum of two months so all people will need these. These items can also be dropped off at the following locations if you are not able to make it to the ride but would still like to contribute: Point Cook Chiropractic Health & Wellness Centre Contact: Dr Alfie Dimalanta Suite 807, 1st Floor, 5 Main Street, POINT COOK VIC 3030 Other drop-off locations to be listed soon. We will pack these goods and ship them to the Department of Health, Region 8 Provincial Hospital in Tacloban City, the place hardest hit by the typhoon. One of the organising riders, Al Noveloso, has a relative (Dr. Rhey Ian Noveloso Buluag) who is currently working at the hospital. The goods will be distributed directly to the recipients.
