An example of my friendship with my horse, Shira. I havent been there in 10-11 days, so when I got there today I was expecting her to do her usual misbehaving. (She gets mad when Im away too long.) But as soon as I started working on her she started to nuzzle me. When we were in the park, I was suddenly overcome with emotion, both grief and worry. Shira continued to move forward but her nose came around and kept rubbing my leg. That small acknowledgement made me start to cry. Shira stopped walking and just kept her nose on my leg. When we got back to the barn I returned her to the field and took off her halter. She did not move. I patted her head and told her to go play. Her response was to rub me with her head from my toes to my forehead, then stand gently still for a few moments. I realized she was going to stay until I turned to go. So I did. I am so touched. And grateful. Our pets can be small or large: they somehow know when we need their quiet love.
