An example of something many of us have encountered, but for those who have not..... That major stumbling block for my lineage was proving that my Patriots grandson was in fact such. My Patriots son from whom my line descends drown in the Hudson river in 1850. He lived in Putnam County NY. I found the incident report from Putnam, but could not find his Estate settlement. After months of fruitless searching, I contacted a local historian who had the settlement paper on her hard drive (and was about to delete it from a lack of inquiries). The settlement was from Duchess County, not Putnam. While my Patriots son had lived in and begun his fateful boat ride from Putnam - he washed up deceased on the opposite shore, which was in Duchess County. So Duchess handled the estate settlement. I was rummaging the wrong county.
