An excellent Sunday at our AFIcionados movie group, where we watched both The Godfather & The Godfather Part II back to back. Yes, GFII is lower-rated than GFI, but we stalled watching it by 10 slots or so so we could do the big Double Feature. They really are both amazing movies. Both long, 3 hours-ish each, but not a minute wasted. Amazing ensemble casts for both, with big roles for Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, John Cazale, Robert Deniro, Diane Keaton, & Talia Shire, and dozens more great actors like Abe Vigoda, Lee Strassberg, Sterling Hayden, Bruno Kirby, etc. Pretty much the mid-70s take on who to watch over the next 40 years! A fascinating take on honor, on loyalty, on paranoia, on its just business. Great scenes illustrating how the Mafia, organized crime, can come across as almost decent and gentile when compared with drug gangs, with military regimes in Italy or Cuba, with the corruption in our own US Congress. Insights into what to takes to be a leader- the isolation, the regrets, the pain of having those near to you let you down in both little and lethal ways. Fun to play great line bingo- its kind of amazing how much of our modern vocabulary comes from this movie. Make him an offer he cant refuse. Sleeps with the fishes. I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart! I just want to wet my beak. Leave the gun. Take the cannoli. We had pasta & an aMAZing sauce that Colleen made, & sweet Italian sausage. We had a huge antipasto salad with a bunch of different dressings. We had cannoli. We had all the leftover Halloween candy. Had to keep our strength up with more than 6 hours of serious movie-watching! imdb/title/tt0068646/
